Your First Day on Flat Water

Calm water is the best classroom. Here's how to launch, sit, paddle and come back in — without the overwhelm.

Your First Day on Flat Water

Pick the right water

A sheltered harbour, a lake, or a slow river with easy bank access. Avoid offshore wind, boat traffic and anything you can't easily paddle back across. Check the forecast — wind is what turns an easy paddle hard.

Wear the PFD before you launch

Put your buoyancy aid on at the car, not at the water's edge. It should be snug enough that it doesn't ride up over your ears when you tug the shoulders. This is the single habit that matters most.

Launch low and stable

Keep your weight low and centred as you get in. Sit, settle, then push off. Hold the paddle with hands a little wider than shoulder-width, knuckles up, and take slow, even strokes close to the hull.

Know how you'll get back

Before you drift out, look back at your launch point and pick a landmark. Paddle out against the wind first so the return is the easy leg. Turn back with plenty of energy to spare.
